HP G60-440us

Best cheap laptop

pros
  • Low price
  • Better processor than other cheap laptops
  • Good components
  • Large display
cons
  • Processor uses old technology
  • Performance lags more expensive cheap laptops
  • Some missing features

For those on tight budgets, few laptops do a better job of giving you more for less than the 16-inch HP G60-440us. The heart of this laptop is a dual-core Pentium CPU. Although that's older technology, and it's bit slower than the Core 2 Duo processors found in laptops that are more expensive, it is also clearly superior to the less capable AMD and Intel Celeron processors found in many other laptops in this price range. The 320 GB hard drive, 3 GB of RAM and other features are also above average for the class. If you have more to spend, the 13-inch Gateway UC7807u (*Est. $650) is a svelte traveling companion that's just a touch chunkier than those oh-so-sophisticated and oh-so-expensive ultraportable laptops. It's also blessed with a more powerful processor than the HP G60-440us and offers loads of extras.

Save for a slightly faster processor, the HP G60-440us is very similar to the just-discontinued HP G60-235DX (which was a Best Buy exclusive) and HP G60-230US. The best testing-based review is by CNET, which reports on the HP G60-235DX. Mark Kyrnin of About.com analyzes the HP G60-230US in a review that's balanced but does not detail testing. User reviews of the HP G60-230us are plentiful and can be found at Amazon.com, Newegg.com and elsewhere.
